Configuration

Tallow stores its configuration in a TOML file following XDG conventions.

Config File Location

Platform Path
Linux ~/.config/tallow/config.toml
macOS ~/Library/Application Support/tallow/config.toml
Windows %APPDATA%\tallow\config.toml

Show the path on your system:

Terminal window
tallow config path

Configuration Keys

Network

# Default relay server address
relay = "relay.sendtallow.com:4433"
# Enable Tor by default (SOCKS5 proxy)
tor = false
# Tor SOCKS5 proxy address
tor_proxy = "127.0.0.1:9050"
# DNS-over-HTTPS for privacy
doh = true
doh_server = "https://cloudflare-dns.com/dns-query"
# Disable peer-to-peer, always use relay
no_p2p = false

Transfer

# Default compression algorithm: zstd, lz4, brotli, none
compression = "zstd"
# Zstd compression level (1-22)
compression_level = 3
# Auto-accept file offers without confirmation
auto_accept = false
# Default output directory for received files
output_dir = "."

Identity

# Display name shown to peers
display_name = ""
# Auto-generate identity on first run
auto_identity = true

Privacy

# Strip EXIF metadata from images before sending
strip_exif = true
# Pad traffic to resist timing analysis
traffic_padding = false

CLI Management

Terminal window
# View current configuration
tallow config show
# Set a value
tallow config set relay my-relay.example.com:4433
tallow config set compression lz4
tallow config set tor true
# Reset to defaults
tallow config reset

Environment Variables

Environment variables override config file values:

Variable Overrides
TALLOW_RELAY relay
TALLOW_CODE Pre-set room code for send/receive
TALLOW_TOR tor (set to 1 or true)
TALLOW_CONFIG Config file path
NO_COLOR Disable colored output

Browser Client Settings

The browser client (homepage send module) keeps non-sensitive preferences in localStorage under the tallow-settings- prefix (for example, notification and privacy toggles). Cryptographic session keys and identity material live only in memory and are never persisted to disk.

Precedence

Configuration is resolved in this order (highest priority first):

  1. Command-line flags (--relay, --tor, etc.)
  2. Environment variables (TALLOW_RELAY, etc.)
  3. Config file (config.toml)
  4. Built-in defaults
